Networking Skills

Course Summary

This course provides delegates with the skills to build a network of professional connections. And the know how to relax and even start enjoying “working a room!”

Introduction

For many people a fear of networking runs a close second to a fear of public speaking! Images of entering a room and knowing no-one, standing on the edge of a conversation trying to break in or getting the brush off when you do. Luckily networking isn't an "innate" ability some people are born with but a skill that anyone can learn, and you don't have to an extrovert to be successful; you just need to use the right strategies.

According to the Financial Times Guide to Business Networking there are four key ways to build your Networking Opportunity Score:

  • Developing your Personal Brand
  • Increasing your Visibility
  • Developing Social Capital
  • Establishing Credibility

Put this together with a host of tips and techniques for attending networking events, then all that’s left to become truly proficient networker is to get out there and practise!

Delegates attending this course will be offered a free place to practise their networking skills at the Female Potential Net-Connecting night on Tuesday 27th November at Catherine Best.

Tutor Profile

Michelle Johansen is an experienced, professionally trained and qualified facilitator and coach. With over 20 years in leadership positions in the finance industry before becoming a coach 12 years ago, Michelle learned the importance of networking the hard way. “It was only after I decided to leave my job that I came across the phrase - it’s too late to build a network when you need one!” Not finding a networking group that suited her needs she went on to form and front the Women’s Development Forum, which ran over 120 meetings across Guernsey and Jersey from 2009 - 2017. In 2018 she formed a new networking initiative called Female Potential, which hosts an eclectic range of networking events through the year, all designed to make networking easy.
