MORE than a dozen people have registered interest in Guernsey’s first undergraduate law degree.

Last month, the GTA University Centre, in partnership with the Institute of Law Jersey, announced it was offering islanders the chance to study the University of London’s LLB Law Degree without having to leave Guernsey.

So far 14 people have registered their interest in starting the course in September. The GTA has now organised two lunchtime briefing sessions on 20th June and 15th July for anyone interested in finding out more about the degree.

‘We thought it would be popular but the interest in this new law degree has exceeded our expectations. Enquiries have been from a cross-section of the community, from school leavers to people looking to change their career and others who just want to obtain a new qualification,’ said Kate Lenfestey, GTA University Centre programmes manager.

‘We are absolutely delighted that so many islanders are considering this unique on-island opportunity to obtain a law degree which is recognised by the legal professions in Guernsey as well as those in England and Wales.’

Ms Lenfestey said that with UK university costs being £9,000 a year, plus thousands more for accommodation, living costs and travel, the £7,995 per year cost of the on-island degree was appealing to those who were interested in obtaining a law degree.

The course is comparable with any law degree in the UK and consists of eight hours tutor teaching time and 16-20 hours of self-study recommended per week. Although it has a standard entry requirement of BCC at A-level or 25 International Baccalaureate points, it is also open to mature students who may not have the standard entry requirements but who may still be eligible to complete year one as a Diploma in Law, and on successful completion may be able to progress directly to Year 2 of the LLB.

‘The degree can be used as a stepping stone to qualifying as a barrister or solicitor and is recognised across the world. The University of London is one of the UK’s top collegiate universities

and so students will receive tuition from experienced UK academies which will be complemented by on-island mentoring and tutorials from local lawyers and advocates.’
